It shows us many things. First, this was the first public miracle that Jesus performs. It reveals His Divinity. Second, Jesus responds to a very human need. The host family ran out of wine for the wedding guests, a true embarrassment. By changing water into wine Jesus shows His Divinity and compassion. Third, He did so at the request from His human Mother (and who among us has not done a favor at the request of our mother?). The dialogue between Jesus and Mary shows that wonderfully close parent - child relationship we all desire to have with our parents and our children. Mary stated the problem; Jesus understood her implication and, although it seems He wasn’t going to do anything, He solved the problem in a most wonderful way! Fourth, the six water jars brought to Jesus were those used for ceremonial washings. The headwaiter says to the bridegroom after he had tasted the wine: “Everyone serves the good wine first…you have kept the good wine until now.” [John 2:10]. This points to God’s revelations to the world. He gave the Israelites many blessings, the prophets, and status as the Chosen People, that was the wine. Then God sent His Son, Jesus, for our salvation. He is the Good Wine. He is the seventh jar of wine. Finally, Mary says to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” [John 2:5]. If we, God’s servants, just followed that piece of advice, how blessed would our lives be? Do whatever Jesus tells us to do is simple advice from our Mother, which will take us a lifetime to carry out! Now you know!
