Deacon's Corner: Who is responsible for passing on the Catholic faith?

If we pointed to someone else, notice there are three fingers pointing right back at us! In the Sacrament of Baptism, the parents and sponsors (godparents) promise to raise the children in the Faith. This promise includes teaching them about God, how to pray, and living a Christian life by loving God and neighbor. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Section 1213, teaches, “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and the word.” Baptism opens the way to the reception of the Eucharist, Penance, Confirmation, Marriage, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders. It provides the baptized with the opportunity to participate fully in the liturgical life of our Faith. Parents and godparents lead the way by deepening their own understanding of the Faith so they can live it and pass it on. What better way to do that than to participate in Family Faith Formation or serve God as a Catechist? One of the surest ways to deepen our Faith is to teach it to our children. Now you know!
